THE DALY NEWS: MTV heartthrob Carson Daly has inked a new contract with the
music video network and CBS to develop new shows and to continue to serve as
a host for both networks. Daly, 26, will stay on as host of MTV's Total
Request Live but will also become an executive producer of the show. He's
also expected to continue to host such high-profile CBS events as the Miss
Teen USA and Miss USA beauty pageants.

BUFFY'S LESBIAN PLOT: Watch for sparks to fly between Willow (Alyson
Hannigan) and Tara (Amber Benson) on future episodes of Buffy the Vampire
Slayer, according to The Advocate. "There is a romance growing between Tara
and Willow," confirms series creator Joss Whedon. "I don't want to make it a
big issue. This story will not focus on sexuality as a theme but on the
intense emotional bond between the characters."

SCORSESE & PILEGGI GANG UP: The movie-making team of Martin Scorsese and
Nick Pileggi (Goodfellas, Casino) is planning a Japanese gangster flick
about an American-born Italian who became a post-WWII mob kingpin, according
to Variety. Screenwriter James Cahill (The Sopranos) will write the script,
based on the book Tokyo Underworld by Robert Whiting.

NBC EYES NEW CRIME DRAMA: NBC has ordered a one-hour crime drama pilot from
writer James Ellroy (L.A. Confidential) that will star Miguel Ferrer (Twin
Peaks, Point of No Return), according to Variety. Frasier star Kelsey
Grammer is serving as executive producer on the pilot, tentatively titled
L.A. Sheriff's Homicide.

KIEFER SPLITS WITH WIFE: Kiefer Sutherland (Flatliners, Young Guns) has
filed for divorce from his wife of three years, Kelly Winn Sutherland.
According to court papers, the actor and his wife have been separated since
June 30.

DOUGLAS AND ZETA-JONES TO TEAM?: Parents-to-be Michael Douglas and Catherine
Zeta-Jones might star together on-screen for the first time in the Steven
Soderbergh-directed drama Traffic, according to Variety. Zeta-Jones is
already signed to play the wife of a drug kingpin; Douglas is negotiating to
play a judge-turned-U.S. drug czar.

MARK FUHRMAN CASHES IN: Mark Fuhrman, the former LAPD detective who gained
notoriety during the O.J. Simpson trial, has sold the rights to his
true-life crime book Murder in Connecticut to Columbia TriStar TV for a
movie of the week to be developed by Fox TV, says Variety. The book, which
investigates the notorious murder of Connecticut teen Martha Moxley, has
also led to consulting and advisor deals for Fuhrman with ABC News and CBS
News.

COURTNEY AND WHOOPI GO TO MARS?: Courtney Love and Whoopi Goldberg are being
eyed as possible co-stars in a new sci-fi pic about a mission to mars, says
Variety. The movie, John Carpenter's Ghost of Mars, would star the grunge
rocker as the tough leader of the expedition and Goldberg as a science
officer.
