Since Merrick is seen in "Becoming, Part 1" (his name isn't used, but
it's in the script), we know Buffy had another Watcher before Giles.
All references to Merrick (in the movie, comic books, trade paperbacks,
etc.) have him dead, but his death is never mentioned in the series.

Not even when she meets Faith, who also got her first Watcher killed.

However, Merrick's death is probably why Giles, who dabbled in black
magic and whom the Council doesn't like, got the job. They probably
figured Buffy would get him killed, too.
