Riley is not possible, Spike was created in S2. Giles I can
understand, but their biggest comparison is that they are both
British. And Giles is way to serious.
Look at some comparisons and differences between Xander and Spike.
BBBW: both Spike and Xander give their lover a necklace. Both are
more or less the Zeppo of their little group.
Lover's Walk and the Zeppo: both start with identity issues and both
break free from them. Only Spi
ke does
it on very loud and visible way
and with violence, while with Xander does it the quiet way (and
helpful) and nobody even knows it. (Both eps are written by the same
author).
Spike wears a tight t-shirt and tight pants. Xander loose pants and
sweat-shirts. VampXander and the Hyena wear cloths similar to Spike.
Both are comic relief.
Both hate Angel.
Both love Buffy, and are prepared to do *anything*  for her. Only
Spike as a soulless demon can go further. They both love women in
general.
Both have a very high emotional perspective. THE difference with for
example Riley. Only Spike uses it for his own gain.
Spike is a lover. Xander is a friend. VampXander is a lover too.
Spike (apparently) is hot. Xander is (apparently) cute.
In S4 both character are thrown back to a situation that's their
lowest in life. (Doomed). Ever noticed that whenever a character
reaches the lowest point or
 worst
moment in her/his life is at that
moment with Xander? Probably the reason why demons are attracted to
him:)
I have to say that Giles also reached his lowest point in S4. Who do
you see the most together in S4? Giles, Spike and Xander.

It's not unlikely to think that Spike was meant to be Xander's gay
partner. (I'm NOT a Spander!) They chose for Willow to be gay,
probably because Seth Green left.

Riley is more modelled after (again) Xander, IMO. Riley is the man,
Xander would have wanted to be. (Past tense!) Xander was very
idealistic. (Which changed drastically in S6).
But, Riley is too dumb and emotional too vulnerable. No way, that
he's a match for either Xander or Spike.

Again, that's only the dark side. But, all characters, except for
Xander, have that. Even Riley tends to get to the darkness in S5.
Don't get me wrong, darkness is a very important aspect of the
series, but only a part. And it's why Xander plays such an important
aspect in this part.
The Ripper is part evil and part bitterness. The Spike/Xander arcline
is from S2 till S7's Him; almost constantly. Giles' is only in a few
eps. Giles' arcline is that of one who needs to become a full
Watcher, which he can't and therefore has created an alterego, called
the Ripper. At first Giles' is still i
nnocent
 in his role as a
Watcher and his more of fatherfigure. Angelus changed that at first.
But, the real change came when he needed to kill Ben. Which led to
LMPT, one last crucial step of Giles being a Watcher was made. Spike
only happened to be a plotdevice for that. There's nothing between
Spike and Giles. As a matter of fact it's even more Xander and Giles
as Xander was the one who suggested to kill Ben.
Willow: "It's a good fight, Buffy, and I want in."
Buffy:  "I kinda love you."
