I don't think it was a in an out of character way that Buffy left. 
Buffy felt tired and done after S7 to me. She damn well needed a 
break. However, that Willow took that kind of command felt WillowSue 
to me. And some side scenes with Buffy (and Xander who had the most 
interesting arcline, since S3) in Rome would have been nice.
Despite my dislike of several of the main characters, it's still a 
damn good show.
