A Plethora of Possibilities

[reviews]

Disclaimers and such: I own now't, I just mess 'em about. Could someone let me know how to do italics? Until then, thoughts are indictated by **...** as I'm new to this malarky. :)

**Fantastic,** Willow thought as she scanned the classroom, **the new girl's already been taken under Cordelia's skanky wing.** There went any chances of hanging out with someone other than her horndog best friend, Xander Harris. Not that she thought she was competing on the same social level as the gorgeous blonde, who had quite literally taken her breath away when Willow saw her step out of her mom's car, a forlorn expression on her face. **I wanna see her smile...** her thoughts rambled on, occasionally straying away from the image of the new girl, but not often. Soon enough, half the day was nearly over, and Willow had barely noticed it.

History was a subject to cruise in, so Willow let her mind wander to flights of fancy whilst the rest of the class were focused on the black plague, the scourge of Europe. Before she knew it, the bell was ringing and she was thirsty, so she headed to the drinks fountain, where Cordelia and the new girl were waiting to disparage her outfit. She got out of there as soon as she could, but not without casting a quick look at the blonde, who shyly smiled. **Well, at least the blonde didn't say anything, that's a good sign, right?** To tell the truth, Willow was too shy to wear the fashionable clothes she had, she thought Cordy and the others would accuse her of trying to be "cool" and mercilessly draw attention to her, when, as one of the most intelligent people in the school - teachers included - she just wanted to hide. **Just remember Karma. Maybe if I'm lucky a piano will fall on her.**

Willow trudged through the school until she reached her usual spot for lunch at the stone bench. It was like any other Californian day, the sun was shining brightly, well, actually, there's a shadow...

"Hey! You're Willow right?"

Willow looked up, not quite understanding why the new girl was standing there. "Uh, did you want me to move?"

"What? No, how's about we start off with hi, I'm Buffy! And I have a favour to ask; it doesn't involve moving, but it does involve hanging out with me?"

"Er, aren't you hanging out with Cordelia?

"I can't do both?"

"Not legally." Buffy laughed at Willow's quip, sat down and then smiled at the redhead in a way that made said redhead feel very warm and tingly. **Say something!**

"How's your first day going?"

Buffy smiled, touched that someone thought to ask her that. "It's ok I guess, but I seem to be a little swamped in classes. As in, waving my hands over my head, searching for a clue? That kinda swamped."

"Oh!" Willow exclaimed, her eyes lighting up, "I can totally help out if you want? I'm kind of like a whiz at, well, a lot of things. Mostly acadamia, but there are other things that I could be described as, proficient, in, like-" **Oh God stop me babbling now...**

"Really?" Buffy arched her eyebrow, smiling in a what could only be described as a seductive manner, and then, on receiving a very prompt blush from Willow, blushed herself. Both girls were thinking the same thing... **she's purty...** and when Xander and Jesse came up to the see the two girls, well, mainly Buffy because they hadn't noticed the cuteness that is Willow yet, neither of our heroines were much impressed.

"Hey Will, aren't you going to introduce us to your friend?"

"Will..." Buffy murmurmed dreamily, "I like the nickname!"

"Really? Well, your name's pretty, uh, original?" On seeing Buffy's mock irritation, Willow quickly amended, "in a quirky way!" Then frowned at her choice of words. Buffy laughed.

"Xander, this is Buffy, Buffy, Xander-"

"Oh, I know, we go way back. Old friends..."

Buffy and Willow stopped listening and looked at each other with amused glances, before turning back to the kind hearted but exceedingly clumsy human spectacle before them. That is before Cordelia came over, prompting a nervous, "She's not hanging out with us!" from Willow, and attempted contact from Jesse.

"Oh please. I don't mean to interrupt your downward mobility," she scathingly remarked, addressing Buffy, "but I just wanted to tell you that you won't be meeting Coach Foster, the woman with the chest hair, because gym was cancelled due to the extreme dead guy in the locker."

Buffy blanched, and after a correctly diagnosed as morbid conversation with Cordelia, hurriedly dashed away - although not without a secret look that spoke of budding possibilities between Willow and Buffy - leaving Cordelia non plussed and Jesse and Xander slightly miffed that they couldn't have more time with the blonde. Willow, on the other hand, smiled dazedly and thought with excitement the new possibilities her meeting this beautiful Buffy opened up. She felt better than she had done in months.

-------

After her meeting with Willow, Buffy ran to check the dead guy in the locker, and inwardly groaned when she saw the twin puncture marks on the neck. **Can't a girl get a break on her first day back?** She was pretty annoyed by the time she made it to the librarian watcher hybrid, and had no trouble in storming in there and venting her frustrations. However, when he'd made the valid point that if she didn't care, why did she come to him, she was at a bit of a loss for words. As she hurried out of the library, his words were reverberating around her mind. And strangely enough, the one image that came to mind was that of Willow, looking serenely beautiful on the bench. **If something happened to her, I'd care.** She resolved to find her after school and find out what she was doing tonight.
