Prologue

Buffy struggled against the chains holding her on the concrete alter. The cavern was nearly pitch black, the darkness so thick she could barely make out the robed figures of the vampires gathered around her.

She had no idea how much time had passed since she was captured. Every time she had woken the vampires had forced more of s sweet smelling drug down her throat and almost before she'd finished drinking it, sleep took her away. Buffy didn't know if it had been hours, days, or weeks, since that snowy night in Cleveland. She did remember that she fought five newbie vampires until she felt a pinch in her thigh. When she glanced down there was a dart in her leg, then nothing until she woke-up chained to the alter. Just the vagueness the drug caused.

Things were not looking good for her. First since she was awake that meant it was time for whatever the vamps had planned and secondly, if a rescue was coming then the scoobs would have been there by now.

At some unseen command all the vampires lit candles. The vampires around the edge of the cavern put torches into the sconces on the walls until it was almost as bright day. For the first time Buffy could see that there were literally hundreds of vampires in frumpy brown robes surrounding her. All of them standing perfectly still in the cold air and it was suddenly cold, despite all the candles and the torches.

The silence was more frightening than had been shouting. She pulled on the chains holding her nude form on the frigid rock of the alter. Movement to her left caught her attention as the vampires parted to allow a single form passage through them. There were so many of them and they were so fluid that it looked like the seas were parting.

The lone figure floated down to her and Buffy was fill with a terror like she'd never felt before. Never had she been so helpless, never had her body been so exposed. The power and evil radiated off the figure as it came closer...

It's was face covered with the same oversized brown robe as the other vampires. Buffy's heart was hammering so hard she thought she was about to have a heart attack, her breath was coming in ragged grasps, and the sense of evil was overwhelming her. Each step the figure took towards the helpless slayer filled her with dread. Something worse than her nightmares was about to happen to her and there was nothing she could do to stop it. She pushed and pulled on the chains that held her, the skin on her wrists long since scraped raw, Buffy could both smell and feel the rid lets of blood running down her arms.

The lone figure stood before her and slowly reached up to pull the hood off her face....

Willow.

Willow shouted, "Buffy," the redhead was holding her, the Slayer could smell the strawberry scented shampoo. "Buffy, wake-up!" the witch urged, and the blonde struggled to throw-off the cold of the dream world for the warmth of her lover's arms.

"Huh," Buffy was able to force out of cold, numbed lips. Grasping for air as the weight of evil pressing down on her chest was replaced with the weight of Willow tightly holding her.

"That's it baby, come back to me," Willow begged, and Buffy could taste the saltiness of Willow's tears as she kissed her awake. The witch's hands roaming the blonde's body in desperation to stop withdrawal she knew was coming, that Buffy couldn't help, while she fought the aftermath of the dream.

Buffy pushed Willow away and nearly jumped out the warm bed. The frigid temperature of the room seemed right to the Slayer as the memories of the nightmare threatened to jerk her back into the dream. Bile rose up in her throat and she barely had time to find a trashcan before the sickness hit her as wave after wave crashed through her. When she was finally able to stop, she weakly collapsed on the hardwood of her bedroom's floor.

"Buffy," Willow said warning her that the redhead was about to touch her.

"No!" Buffy shouted, weakly crawling away from Willow. The image of the monster in her dream, the helplessness from her dream world was too much for her. "Don't touch me, please, just don't touch me!" she cried. The first sob felt like it broke her by the second on she couldn't breathe, again. "Make it stop! Please, just make it stop!" Buffy begged Willow or the world or she didn't know.

Buffy vaguely heard Willow's whispered phone conversation with Giles and knew that he would be there in moments. That he would be able to fix it this time, because if he didn't she would....
