"The Willow and Buffy Song"

Disclaimers: As ever, Joss owns the characters and the universe in which they live. The music they listen to is a different matter. Here we have "Left In The Dark" by Jim Steinman, from the album "Bad For Good".
Pairing: Buffy/Willow and a bit of Willow/Oz (for a reason - and it's the last)
Rating: PG-15
Feedback: You should all know the drill by now...but just in case - yes, I want feedback, and it can either be posted or, if you would prefer it to be less public, I'm at batoutofhell25@yahoo.com.
Distribution: I'm not fussy where this ends up - just as long as I get told about it.
Setting/Spoilers: Set a couple of hours after "Too Many Bitter Tears (Chapter 5)". Minor S4 spoilers. Largely AU.
Authors Notes: I've been wanting to do this fic for ages...so here goes. Hopefully it's better than Chapters 4/5...

Chapter 6
You Don't Have To Sneak In The Door

/{spoken}
Where did he touch you, and how did it feel, and why did you let it begin?
What did he whisper, and when did you cry, and where do you think it'll end?
How long did you do it, and why did you stop? Did you get to try anything new?
How good was he, honestly? Where did you go? And who made the very first move?\

Willow unlocked the door to her and Buffy's dorm room as quietly as possible. The night that she'd just experienced...well, it had been mind blowing, to say the least. Entering into this kind of a relationship with the slayer had entirely not been something she'd planned on doing, but the rewards were well and truly worth it.
The night hadn't been about sex...though there had been plenty of that. It had been about connecting. The two were now well and truly connected on a completely different level than they'd ever been before. And though Willow still wasn't convinced she was in love with Buffy the same way Buffy was in love with her...there was something there. Something burning...and it was something she wanted to experience time and time again.
That something, the thing she couldn't quite name, that was what she felt certain would grow into love. With Buffy's help... with Buffy's help, she'd be alongside the slayer in no time.
'I'm going to have to talk to Oz...' she realised suddenly.
She decided not to think about that. Maybe he'd take it well...maybe they'd come out the other side as friends. She'd have time to work out what she'd say to him, and maybe Buffy could be there when she confronted the guitarist.
'Buffy...' her thoughts returned to the slayer who was, presently, out patrolling. Buffy had dropped her back off at the dorms before heading out to kill things...'I've sure managed to choose a girl with a wierd job, huh?' Willow thought.
She gently pushed the door open.
"Hey."

/{sung}
You don't have to sneak in the door
Just come on into the room
I've been lying in our bed in the dark all alone
And I've been waiting, I've been waiting for you
There's been no reason to move
It's been as still as a tomb
I needed you oh so badly tonight
But I guess you had better things to do\

"Oz..." Willow whispered in shock.
Oz was sitting in one of the room's few chairs, situated in between the girl's beds. In the contrasting shadows thrown by the streetlights outside, she could just make out an expression on that face.
It was one of hurt, one of worry.
"Where have you been?" Oz asked, concerned. He rose from his seat and began to walk toward her. "We were going to meet tonight...then I came over here..."
"Oh," 'Lie, don't lie. Lie, don't lie.' She settled on 'don't lie', but 'don't tell the whole truth either'. "I was at Giles'." 'Good. Safe. Giles' place is safe.'
Oz raised an eyebrow. "There a big bad going down?"
Willow's eyes widened. "Oh - no. Giles' just wanted my help with something." 'There - safe. Not lying. Giles' did need my help with something.'
Oz stepped closer. "What?"
"Oh - a spell." 'Lying now.' 'What, you want me to tell him "Yes, he wanted my help in getting Buffy out of a blue funk so I admitted my feelings for her and we had hot crazy monkey sex all night long?".'
There was a pause from her conscience.
'Alright, ^I^ wouldn't have put it like ^that^, but...'
'Look - shut up. I'll deal with it.'
She realised that Oz was sniffing the air.
It took a moment for her brain to comprehend the practical upshot of that.

/I should have known that it was coming to this
But I must have been blind
I bet you still got a trace of his love in your eyes
And you still got his eyes on your mind
You swore you'd be with me at seven o'clock
Now it's a quarter to three
Well whatever you got and whoever it was
I guess you couldn't get it for me
Whatever you got and whoever it was
I guess you couldn't get it from me\

Oz suddenly took several great strides backwards. "Whoa..."
Willow, understandably, panicked. "Look, Oz, I can explain -"
"You...smell like sex...and Buffy..." The expression on Oz's face as the small man stepped backwards into a pool of light from the street was one of pain and deep betrayal.
"It's not what you think." Willow said stupidly - the thinnest, but only, defence she had to offer.
"You didn't have sex with Buffy?" Oz asked.
Willow held her breath for a moment before responding. "Alright, so I was never going to be right with that one..."
Oz grabbed his jacket from where he had draped it over the chair. "I need to go."
Willow reached out and grabbed his arm. "No - we need to talk."
Oz looked at her with the most pained expression Willow had ever seen in his eyes. "Really?"

/I know that you love me
There's no need to talk
I see the look in your eyes and I got the proof
And there are no lies on your body
So take off your dress
I just want to get at the truth\

"I'm not a big one for using words." Oz stated.
'But you're good with stating the obvious.' Willow resisted the urge to say that out loud.
Oz continued. "So - let's make this conversation simple. Is this 'talk' going to end with you and I still together?"
Willow slowly, sadly, shook her head.
Oz, however, nodded. "Then I can pretty much work out the rest of the dialogue without having to actually experience it."
Willow looked sadly straight in Oz's eyes. "I'm sorry Oz - I didn't want to hurt you."
Oz shrugged. "In all honesty, I saw it coming."
Willow was slightly taken aback. "What?"
Oz sighed. "I've known that Buffy's been after you for some time now."
Willow couldn't quite grasp it. "How? How could you know?"

/And there are so many things I just got to know
You tell me who!
You tell me where!
You tell me when!
Ah, but don't tell me now, I don't need any answers tonight
I just need some love, so turn out the lights, and I'll be left in the dark again
I just need some love, so turn out the lights, and I'll be left in the dark again\

Oz shrugged. "Werewolf thing. I can pick up emotions..."
"Oh." Willow's shoulders slumped. "I should've known."
"Look...I think I'm just gonna go." Oz stated. "I don't think I should be around you much longer."
"But -" Willow began, before Oz cut her off.
"If I'm around you - and all I can smell on you is her - then I'm never going to be able to control myself - and I don't want to lose control." Oz reached up and touched her cheek. "I think we could have had something wonderful."
Willow was amazed. Here was Oz - stoic, always in control Oz - with tears in his eyes. "Me too." Willow admitted. "But..."
"It just wasn't meant to be." Oz nodded. "I'll see you around?" He asked.
Willow merely nodded.
Oz stepped past her, out of the dorm room door...and out of her life.
She sat down on Buffy's bed.

/But down in my soul, down in my soul
I know that you love me
There's no need to talk
I see the look in your eyes and I got the proof
And there are no lies on your body
So take off your dress
I just want to get at the truth\

Which was the position Buffy found her in nearly an hour later.

---

To Willow's own surprise, she didn't shed a single tear as she told Buffy of the encounter with Oz. This massive, life-altering event - one that should have shattered her and left her in tears the same way she had left Buffy on the stage a few days ago (and that was a memory she'd just as soon forget) - somehow didn't effect her at all.
'No - wait.' It did effect her. It had made her feel horrible - and it had hurt like nothing before.
But all that was somehow negated by the fact that - on that very night - she had Buffy's unconditional love to get her through it. And that thought made her so happy that she didn't think shedding tears was a possibility.

/And there are so many things I just got to know
You tell me who!
You tell me where!
You tell me when!
Ah, but don't tell me now, I don't need any answers tonight
I just need some love, so turn out the lights, and I'll be left in the dark again
Left in the dark...again\

Daniel Osbourne looked up at the dorm room with traces of tears still in his eyes. Part of him was tempted to return there and declare to Buffy that he would fight her for Willow, but...the more sensible and human side of him overpowered the initial urge.
He wandered off towards his house, thinking about the sudden right-angled turn that his life had just taken. There was simply no way for him to completely comprehend what had just happened to him - but he knew that he would get used to it soon enough. Buffy would be good to Willow - he was sure of it. The amount of love he'd always sensed going from the blonde to the red-head...well, it was practically smothering.
What had him puzzled, though, was the fact that there never seemed to be the same kind of wont and love coming from his...'ex-girlfriend, I guess.' Sure, Willow had always cared for Buffy...but he had no idea what had made her take the leap from friend to lover...
'It's none of your concern.' He finally told himself. 'It's their life - let them live it.'
He nodded.
That definitely sounded like the right course of action.
And he would do it far, far from here.

/{spoken}
Did he ever get rough? Did you ever get tender?
Did it leave any scars? Do you expect them to heal?
What did he look like? Did he remind you of me?
Were you willing to beg or to kneel?
Did he keep his eyes open? Did you bother to look?
Or was he only a kid after all?
Where did he touch you, and how did it feel?
If you need him again will he still be on call?
And who made the very first move?
Who made the very first move...\

(Feedback would, as ever, be appreciated)
