Part twenty one

"I don't understand."

Buffy smiled at Principal Wood.

"This is my letter of resignation. I'm moving back to L.A. I'll stay until the end of the school year, but after that, I'm leaving town."

He sighed, looking at the letter in his hands.

"And there's nothing I can do or say to change your mind?"

Buffy shook her head no.

"Well, then. We'll just have to make sure you have a good sending off." He smiled, the idea of a party lifting his spirit's a little.

"You were an excellent art teacher. We'll miss you."

-----

Willow grinned as she walked into art, her eyes catching Buffy's. It had been a month since they had spent the night together on her birthday, and the ring Willow always wore, was still on her finger.

She had taken the necklace and bracelet off to keep them good, but couldn't bring herself to remove the ring.

"Okay, today I want you to do something different. Instead on me telling to you look at something, and draw it, I want you to pick something from a memory, and put it on paper." Buffy smiled as she saw a few hands go up.

"And before anyone asks, it cannot be anything sexual."

The jocks who had their hands raised sighed and lowered them.

Buffy was surprised when she saw the pout on Willow's face, and groaned silently, wishing she would put it away.

"You have starting from now to pencil out a drawing."

-----

Buffy walked along the backs of the tripods, inspecting the drawings so far.

She stopped when she reached Xander's.

"That's the memory you picked?" She whispered in his ear.

He nodded, looking at his picture.

It showed two children, one boy and one girl. The children looked to be around five years old, and the boy was holding a doll above his head, smiling as the girl stretched to get it.

"Don't tell her, but I still have that Barbie."

Buffy grinned and let her eyes linger on Willow.

"Promise."

Willow's was the next drawing she reached, and her eyes widened when she saw that Willow had the same idea as Xander, only her drawing was a 'what happened next' kind of thing.

The boy was running away as the girl was chasing him around the swing set.

Buffy smiled and let her hand brush Willow's as she passed her, feeling the shudder that ran through her lover as she did so.

"Okay, times up."

-----

Xander was grinning like an idiot as they left school.

"What are you grinning about?"

He stopped, and stood in front of Willow.

"Do you not know what day it is?" When she shook her head no, he sighed.

"Will, its exactly one month until we graduate and say goodbye to this town!"

She gave him a sympathetic look.

"You aren't going to miss them at all?"

It was no secret Xander didn't get on with his parents.

"Are you kidding? They treated me like dirt, hell, they treated Anya like dirt. It's a fresh start, for all of us."

She smiled, thinking of her own fresh start.

"My parents weren't too thrilled when I told them where I wanted to go to school."

Xander frowned.

"But they are letting you go right?"

Willow smiled and nodded her head.

"It is my choice after all."

-----

The weekend saw them all, minus Buffy, at the Bronze.

Willow pouted for a full hour when the blonde didn't turn up with Anya.

Lorne had called and needed her to go down to L.A, so Buffy had called Willow quickly, telling her that she might not be back in time.

Turns out she was right.

"What did he want anyway?"

Anya shrugged.

"Buffy didn't say, but he sounded freaked when I answered the phone to him."

-----

Buffy sighed as she watched the police leave.

"Are they gone?"

Turning, she faced her cousin, a glare on her face.

"Yes."

He flinched and gave her a half smile.

"How was I supposed to know Nest was dealing drugs on the side?"

Buffy threw her hands up in the air.

"Lorne, you are supposed to vet your security."

He gave her a sheepish smile.

"I liked the guy, I thought I had read him pretty well."

Buffy shook her head and walked to her car.

"Obviously not."

He frowned, and jogged after her.

"Your leaving?"

She nodded and got into her car.

"I'm meeting Willow and the others at the Bronze."

He smiled knowingly.

"And how is our little redhead?"

Buffy's smile was answer enough.

He stopped her before she drove off.

"She makes you happy Buff, and its been so long since I've seen you happy."

Buffy smiled, and kissed his cheek before pulling away and heading back to Sunnydale.

-----

Willow was stirring her drink, half listening to Cordy go on about a pair of new shoes she had gotten, when she felt a tap on her shoulder.

Turning, a smile came to her face when she saw Buffy.

"You made it." She wanted to stand and hug the blonde, or pull her into a kiss. Unfortunately, school was still in session.

Cordy scowled when she saw Buffy. It wasn't that she didn't like the blonde, but she was their teacher for gods sake. It didn't matter if Xander was dating her best friend.

It was just plain weird, and really not cool.

Buffy saw the look on Cordy's face, but couldn't bring herself to care about it.

Sitting down in Anya's seat, she looked up to see the bar was empty.

"I'm going to get a drink, would you two like one?"

Cordy shook her head no and stood up.

"I'm going to dance. Willow you coming?"

The redhead shook her head and Cordy sighed before heading off by herself.

"I don't think she likes me."

Willow shrugged.

"Who cares, I like you, that's the main thing."

Buffy smiled and looked again to the bar.

"Do you want one?"

Willow nodded her head.

"Surprise me."

Smiling, Buffy left for the bar, not seeing the brunette coming up to her until she bumped into her.

"Oh sorry... Gwen."

"Hey baby, miss me?"
