Part nine - NEW TEACHERS

September first came quicker than anyone had expected, and with it, came the students.

Over the summer, the Sunnydale gang, and the Hogwarts gang had become good friends, and the first thing the Hogwarts gang did, was warn the others about Draco Malfoy.

Nothing could have prepared the Sunnydale gang when they actually saw him.

Buffy and Angel took one look at the sixteen year old, before laughing.

The kid was almost a carbon copy of Spike.

"Something funny?"

Buffy turned and met his eyes, raising a eyebrow at his defensive nature.

"Do you always speak that way to teachers?"

He froze, before straightening to his full height.

"No way are you a teacher. You aren't old enough."

Buffy smiled, for some reason, she liked him, no matter the warnings Harry and the others had given her.

"Actually, I'm both a student, and a teacher."

Winking, she turned and pulled the smirking Angel by the arm, dragging him over to the rest of the group, who were busy talking to Lee Jordon, a friend of Fred and George.

Malfoy frowned, but let them go without commenting.

Buffy and the others were already at the Gryffindor table when the first years arrive.

They sat back, and watched as Professor McGonagall explained to them about the hat, and smiled at the look on the first years faces.

When the hat began to sing, Buffy could have sworn she saw it wink at her.

In times of old, when I was new,
And Hogwarts barely started,
The founders of our noble school
Thought never to be parted.
United by a common goal,
They had the selfsame yearning
To make the world's best magic school
And pass along their learning.
"Together we will build and teach"
The four good friends decided.
And never did they dream that they
Might some day be divided.
For were there such friends anywhere
As Slytherin and Gryffindor?
Unless it was the second pair
Of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw,
So how could it have gone so wrong?
How could such friendships fail?
Why, I was there, so I can tell
The whole sad, sorry tale.
Said Slytherin, "We'll teach just those
Whose ancestry's purest."
Said Ravenclaw, "We'll teach those whose
Intelligence is surest"
Said Gryffindor, "We'll teach all those
With brave deeds to their name."
Said Hufflepuff, "I'll teach the lot
And treat them just the same."
These differences caused little strife
When first they came to light.
For each of the four founders had
A house in which they might
Take only those they wanted, so,
For instance, Slytherin
Took only pure-blood wizards
Of great cunning just like him.
And only those of sharpest mind
Were taught by Ravenclaw
While the bravest and the boldest
Went to daring Gryffindor.
Good Hufflepuff, she took the rest
and taught them all she knew,
Thus, the houses and their founders
Maintained friendships firm and true.

So Hogwarts worked in harmony
for several happy years,
but then discord crept among us
feeding on our faults and fears.

The Houses that, like pillars four
had once held up our school
now turned upon each other and
divided, sought to rule.
And for a while it seemed the school
must meet an early end.
what with dueling and with fighting
and the clash of friend on friend.
And at last there came a morning
when old Slytherin departed
and though the fighting then died out
he left us quite downhearted.
And never since the founders four
were whittled down to three
have the Houses been united
as they once were meant to be.

And now the Sorting Hat is here
and you all know the score:
I sort you into Houses
because that is what I'm for.
But this year I'll go further,
listen closely to my song:
though condemned I am to split you
still I worry that it's wrong,
though I must fulfill my duty
and must quarter every year
still I wonder whether sorting
may not bring the end I fear.
Oh, know the perils, read the signs,
the warning history shows,
for our Hogwarts is in danger
from external, deadly foes
and we must unite inside her
or we'll crumble from within
I have told you, I have warned you...
let the Sorting now begin.

It seemed that the hat was giving them all a warning, and Buffy frowned, thinking of its words.

One by one, every first year student was sorted into a house.

There had been talk among the older students, all of them wanting to know the identity of the Sunnydale gang.

When Dumbledore stood and clapped his hands, silence fell.

"To those of you who are second year or above, Welcome back. To the first years, Welcome to Hogwarts. We have some new Professors, Mr Giles will be the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, while Miss Summers, and Mr O'Connor will teach a new class. Muggle Defence."

Those who didn't know the Sunnydale gang, searched the table for the two new teachers who had not stood like Giles did.

Dumbledore smiled and motioned for Buffy and Angel to stand, which they did.

The crowd erupted, people asking why the new teachers were sitting at the Gryffindor table.

Once again, Dumbledore clapped his hands, with the same result as before.

"Both Miss Summers and Mr O'Connor are students, already sorted into their chosen house. Never the less, when they are teaching, I expect you all to show them the respect you show to us all."

He slid a side glance at the Slytherin's, but they took no notice.

"Now, with the threat of Voldemort-"

Students gasped when they heard the name, causing Buffy to raise an eyebrow.

"-Professor Giles is the best to teach you all Defence Against the Dark Arts. The reason for Muggle Defence, is very simple. Buffy Summers and Angel O'Conner, would you mind coming to the front."

Buffy looked at Angel, and waited until he had stood to follow suit.

The entire hall was silent.

Dumbledore pulled the two close, and whispered what he wanted them to do.

Buffy frowned, and threw a look at Angel.

"Wont that be counter-active?"

Dumbledore shook his head.

Shrugging, Buffy walked away a few feet, and waited for Angel to make his move.

When he did, he ended up on his back for the trouble, a grinning Slayer looking down at him.

The entire student body gasped, including the Sunnydale gang.

"Come on Angel, don't let the side down."

He grinned and vamped out, getting the desired reaction when students screamed and drew their wands.

Dumbledore clapped his hands, and gestured for them all to sit.

Buffy and Angel went all out, pulling out all the stops, and both were panting by the end of the mock fight.

"Vampires and demons have joined Voldemort. I know that most of you don't believe in the supernatural, but I think that Angel here has proven that Vampire's do exist."

"What about Buffy?" Someone shouted out.

Dumbledore smiled.

"Everything on this planet has a natural enemy. For the Vampire's and the demons, it is the Vampire Slayer."

For those who had heard of both demons and Slayer's, including Malfoy, all looked at Buffy in varying degrees of awe.

Dumbledore nodded to Buffy and Angel to take their seats once more.

They did, with friendly bumping the entire way back.

Buffy sat down, and took Willow's hand, which rested on the table.

"You were excellent."

Buffy turned, and gave her lover a big grin, wanting nothing more than to lean in and plant a kiss on her, but refraining as they were technically in school.
