Chapter Eight

"Giles, the council can't choose my 'mate'." Buffy said in disbelief, anger clearly showing on her face. She glanced quickly at Willow as though asking her permission. "Besides which, I'm already seeing someone." Willow ducked her head down in a vain attempt to cover the bright red blush that was quickly spreading on her face.

"Who?" Lauren asked, for the first time speaking to Buffy herself.

The whole room sat in silence for a few tense moments before the small two letter word popped out of the redhead's mouth. "me."

At the Bronze:

Once they had arrived at the Bronze Xander left the group in search of an unoccupied table, leaving Amy and Tara alone for a few minutes with Cordelia. As soon as he was out of sight Cordelia sighed in dismay. "What's up with you?" Amy asks Cordelia, feigning interest.

"Have you ever really LOOKED at Xander?" she asked, her face getting a dreamy far away look on it.

Amy's eyes nearly bugged out of her sockets.

Xander found a table quickly, and before Amy could say anything to Cordelia's question, he had motioned them over. At the table Amy and Tara were quietly getting acquainted with each other, telling a little bit of their life stories, but not much.

"So, you wanna dance?" Amy asked Tara, feeling suddenly shy.

Just then Buffy walked into the Bronze with Willow in tow. She looked slightly upset, but only Cordelia noticed.

"Hey guys." Buffy said in greeting, and sat down in one of the empty chairs. Willow moved to go and get drinks for the table and when she came back she tried sit in her own seat only to feel herself pulled out on to the dance floor. As a techno song came on Buffy and Willow began rubbing their bodies together suggestively, feeling as though they were the only two people in the world.

Amy and Tara watched him, feeling more and more sorry for both Cordy and Xander until Amy announced that they were gonna go and check in with Giles about a certain spell she'd been wanting to try, and that she'd walk Tara home afterwards. Xander barely noticed Amy talking until she turned around.

"Hey, where are you guys goin?" he asked, quickly figuring out that he'd missed something big at the table. Amy didn't answer him...only stared in disgust at the fact that he had yet to take his eyes off of the dancing couple since they had entered the Bronze. Then grabbing Tara's hand, led her new friend out of the now annoyingly loud club. He had actually tried to ask Buffy to dance a few minutes earlier while Willow was in the ladies room, but she had rejected him, saying maybe he should dance with Cordelia instead. Besides which, Buffy knew that if she were to accept his invitation then there would be no smoochie fest when her and Willow got home later.

Despite the fact that Jesse had practically drooled over Cordelia, Xander found her to be one of the most vile girls in the whole school, simply because she was so stuck up. Xander turned to Cordy in confusion, but the only thing he got from her was a comment about not realizing what he had. After sitting with Xander for about five more minutes without being noticed Cordy quickly took Xander's hand in her own, finally winning over his attention.

"Xander, could you please for one moment tear your eyes away from the Lesbians?" She said in a falsely sugary voice. At this comment his eyes nearly popped out of his head, and his mouth hung open for a few seconds before he regained some semblance of composure.

"They're not...You don't think they're..." He trailed off, unable to find words that would match the shock that was evident on his face.

At the library:

Amy and Tara walked into the library, talking animatedly.

The phone rang and they saw Giles quickly walk out of his office, say hello to them, and answer the phone.

"Hello?" He said.

"Hi Dad, can I go out tonight?" A perky voice on the other end of the line asked.
