Chapter Fourteen

[reviews]

"Once the Slayer and her Mate have come together, they will both gain a certain amount of power. The Slayer's physical prowess will increase, including her speed and agility, and her Mate's magical ability will increase nearly by tenfold. Both of these elements will be useful for the upcoming challenge." Travers said, not bothering to even look up when Buffy began to speak.

"What 'Upcoming Challenge'? You keep talking about it like I should know what the hell you're talking about but you're being too damn cryptic for me to even follow you through a full sentence." She snapped. Willow reached under the table to Buffy's thigh and gently placed a hand on it in an effort to possibly calm the Slayer down. All of the watcher's except for Giles and Travers looked more than slightly miffed by Buffy's rather sudden outburst, however to Buffy it seemed a completely natural thing. If someone had been talking around you in circles for the last fifteen minutes and then ignoring your questions why wouldnt you have an outburst like that?

Travers looked as if he was considering telling the girls exactly what the hell was going on, actually more like he was considering what the outcome might be if he didn't tell them. "The coven of Devenshire has seen a great power rising in Sunnydale. Two actually if you must know. However one is rising much sooner than the other. This is not unusual considering the location of the town, what is unusual however, is that this rise in power coincides with the prophecy made in the thirteenth century about a man and woman who would attempt to strip the chosen one and her mate of their powers, both physically and magically putting all in the town in danger. Without the Chosen One, the prophet fortold, the town would collapse in on itself, and the dark would be forever lasting as the sun would never shine on the town again." Travers finished his speech and folded his hands over one another. He seemed to be waiting for everyone to hold their breaths, if only for dramatic effect, before he continued. "Our sources have also told us that the vampire Angelus has appeared in Sunnydale. Now logic tells us that Angelus will be the man in the prophecy, however who the woman might be has yet to be determined, she is someone with considerable magical power though, of that we are certain."

Buffy rolled her eyes. "Can you say 'Duh'?" she whispered to Willow. For some reason Buffy didn't really seem very worried about the new prophecy. and then she raised her voice. "And if the mate you have chosen for me and I never 'come together'?" She questioned, staring Travers straight in the eyes.

"Well then, obviously it is more probable that you will fail in your quest to save the town from the total darkness. If you had only a small margin of success expected once you had mated, why would you ever be able to defeat this couple without ever mating with your chosen mate?" Travers replied.

"And how exactly did you go about choosing Lauren as a mate for me?" She questioned, throwing a quick sideways glance at her girlfriend.

"Simply put, she is the most compatable person for you with a great deal of magical ability from the coven." Travers said without the slightest bit of hesitation.

"And you only chose from one coven? What about everyone else? What if they had 'magical ablility' but didn't know it??" She questioned the slightly berated looking man.

"That is highly unprobable, most magically inclined people know of their own predisposition." He said huffily.

"And so what? You gave us a compability test?" She asked sarcastically.

"In an essence, yes." he said dramatically.

Buffy rolled her eyes as she stood up and began pacing the room. After several seconds of pacing she said "No, sorry, can't make me do it. There's no way in hell that I'm going to 'mate' with that woman. Sorry, not happenin', and if you think you can make me... well, you're dead wrong." She said with an air of severity in her voice. "So, is that all this meeting was about? Because if so, then I would really like to get back to my Saturday." She said harshly, as she crossed her arms over her chest and began tapping her toe impatiently.

"For now that is all... Meeting adjourned." Travers commanded everyone to vacate the room quickly and Buffy practically stomped down the stairs to the car.

'Oh this'll be a fun day.' Willow thought sarcastically as she followed her pissed off girlfriend, more than a hundred percent positive that she would be getting an earful about what Buffy thought of Travers all the way back to Sunnydale. She sighed in dismay and waited for Giles to unlock the door.
