Chapter Fifteen

"Can you believe that guy? He just...Arrgh!" Buffy screamed in frustration as the car continued down the road. She crossed her arms and began to fume in the backseat.

"Buffy?" Willow asked, waiting for Buffy to look at her, when she didn't, Willow tried again. "Baby? Look at me." She commanded as she took one of the blonde's hands in her own. "Whatever prophecy he's talking about, well, if it was real wouldn't we have heard about it before now?" Willow asked logically. Buffy seemed to be considering this for a minute, then her face fell.

"He has access to things we could never even dream of having, I just wish there was some way of telling if it's true or not! And I mean, c'mon this whole deal with the Mate business? Doesn't that irk you just a little bit? How come I've never heard of that before?" She spit out, this time looking into the rear view mirror at Giles eyes as he drove. He shook his head as if to clear it some before he began speaking.

"While it isn't exactly precidented, it has been done before. Although usually it is the Slayer who selects her mate, not the council. That part I will admit is rather unusual." He said, never once looking back, choosing instead to look at the girls through his rear view mirrow.

"Who are they to say that Willow isn't my mate?" Buffy questioned as she gripped her girlfriends hand tighter. The redhead looked down at the floor, getting a look of doubt on her face.

"Baby, if they say that she's your mate...Well, I'm not saying that I like the idea, but what if there's a reason why she was selected?" Willow asked, never once bringing her eyes up to look at Buffy.

Buffy looked at the girl she loved, who looked in turn at the ground, before she reached over and used her index finger to tilt the redhead's chin up so that they were looking into eachother's eyes. "Hey, don't say that. You know that I love you." She said tenderly, seeming to have forgotten about her outrage at the council's actions as she leaned in and placed a tender kiss on her girlfriends lips. When they both pulled back from the kiss, it wasn't to seperate their bodies, but to bring them together in a loving hug. They stayed like that for a long time, until Willow began to fall asleep in the blonde's arms.

Faith watched in the side view mirrors, doing all she could not to gape at the couple. "I knew it! I always knew there was somethin goin' on between you and Red, B." She said once Willow had fallen asleep. And then, deciding to be even more annoying she began singing. "Red and B, sittin' in a tree, k-i-s-s-i-n-g, first comes love, then comes-" she stopped suddenly, turning around to face the couple, "wait a minute, you can't do the marriage thing, or the baby one, so I guess that's the end of your song." She said with a cheshire grin.

"Shut up Faith!" Buffy said as she attempted to hit the younger girl while not waking up Willow. Faith just stuck her tongue out at the blonde as she pulled far enough away so that Buffy couldn't reach her and turned up the radio as soon as she heard the Beastie Boy's "Girls" song come on. The rest of the ride was made in silence as Buffy let the odd beat soothe her and began to drift off herself. Faith stared out the window at the desert as it passed by, a lost look on her face as she sat contemplating the meaning behind this newest development in her life.

As they pulled up to the library at school Buffy woke up because of the sudden lack of motion, and leaned down, placing a kiss on Willow's cheek and whispering in her ear. "It's time to wake up Baby. Be careful or the tadpoles might get you." She said playfully, and although she knew that Giles hadn't heard what she said, one look at Faith let Buffy knew that her Slayer in Training hearing had let her know what she had said.

"No, no, don't let them get me." Willow said, waking up with a start. She glanced around the car, taking in the three people staring at her before smiling sheepishly. "Come on, I want to research this prophecy." she said after a moment or two's silence, as she took Buffy's hand in her own and they piled out of the car. Glancing around the parking lot they realized that they weren't the only one's up at the school that day either. There was a red convertable that said "Queen C" on the license plate, and looking into the backseat, Willow saw Xander's skateboard. "That's odd." She said to no one in particular as they headed up the stairs and into the building.

A/N: What do you think? I know they're still really short chapters, but I have all of the events of each chapter planned out, so I swear there is some kind of twisted plot line going on. And I do realize that it doesn't seem like I'm sticking with the show's timeline at all, but I promise that there will be some events that you can definently identify as coming from the first season in the next couple chapters to come. - L.
