chapter 3

[reviews]

It was a repeat of the first time. Once at the movies the Chandlers hopped out of the car and were gone. This time neither Buffy nor Willow had any problem with it since it was what they had expected. They even giggled a bit over it. The awkwardness of their first meeting was no longer a factor. And they weren't squished up against opposite doors. Though there hips weren't touching they were sitting much closer than they had the first time.

The movie didn't interest them either. Buffy and Willow talked quietly and freely without being inhibited. Buffy told Willow about her mother, Joyce, a single parent raising her and her younger sister, Dawn. For the most part Buffy said she was happy and had about everything she needed. Oh, money was tight but not at all a major problem.

Willow, in turn, told Buffy about the life of an only child. "I kind of like it. Mostly. Not always. It would have been nice to have had a brother or sister to play with. To hang out with but I don't have to share the attention."

"I hear you. My sister can be........demanding. She gets in the way a lot but she's okay."

"Hey, it's my turn to fetch the popcorn, Will." Buffy said "Be back in a sec."

And she was, handing the box in she held in one hand over to Willow. Even this small act of courtesy made Willow feel nice. Like being on a date she secretly thought.

Munching on popcorn, being close to Buffy. How wonderful. Yep, Willow finally came to realize fully, you're in love. With another chick. For God's sake you're a dyke. And so what?

"Hey. I got a joke." Buffy adjusted in her seat to face Willow fully. "Olaf was working in the woods with his lumberjack friend Do Da Olson when a tree they were sawing fell on Do Da killing him. Olaf had the horrible task of informing Do Da's wife of the accident. 'How do I break such horrible news to her?' he wondered. On the way to the Olson household he came up with a solution. When Mrs. Olson opened the door he sang (the tune is Camp Town Racetrack) 'Guess who died in the woods today?' "

Both Willow and Buffy laughed until they cried.

"Well here's my joke." Willow said and went into her joke. Of course she muffed the build up and totally forgot what the punch line was. It was wonderful moment and without knowing why they again laughed together at Willow's embarrassment.

At one point Buffy took Willow's hand which she was using to shield her face and cover her blush. "Hey," Buffy said. "I'm sure it was a great joke, Will."

The feel of Buffy squeezing her hand froze Willow. And froze Buffy too. That moment in life stopped for each of them. The faced each other not moving as a wave swept over them. Willow's eyes lowered to Buffy's mouth. A mouth that was drawing Willow to it.

Oh God, I'm going to kiss her.

And Buffy could feel something too but she didn't understand. Confused by her own urge, but a slave to it, Buffy felt her head move forward. At the same time Willow's lips parted and her head, very slowly, moved to meet the want inside her. To release it.

As they leaned into each other it happened. A second before their mouths touched Buffy's purse, that was lying between them, clattered to the floor of the car. Out of it spilled a cluster of wooden objects. They were blunt on one end and razor sharp on the other.

The spell of moment broken Willow looked down at the open purse and the contents now on the floor of the car.

Willow scooped one of them up and holding it in her hand asked, "Gee. What are these?"

Buffy closed her eyes trying to think of what to say. Should she lie? Finally, after a long moment she reached out and took it from Willow's hand. There was no turning back from the truth Buffy decided.

Sucking in her breath she let it out and spoke. "That is a stake."

"Like for a tent?"

"Kinda. But............not exactly. Willow? I have to tell you. Please don't say a word. Don't say that I frighten you. Please don't say that. It would hurt too much."

Again a long pause as Buffy studied Willow's face. Then she said it. "I'm a Slayer."

Willow's eyes widened and her mouth dropped open. "You kill people?"

"No. Not people. Vampires."

"Duh. Vampires? Like Draculas?"

Buffy nodded. "Yeah, like that. Demons too. Sometimes."

Willow sat stunned trying to determine if Buffy was serious. She was completely serious. And so was Willow. A smile crossed the astonished expression on her face. I've fallen in love not only with another girl but a girl that's a vampire slayer? Can that be?

"You're not kidding me are you?" Willow had to ask. She needed to hear it again.

A part of Buffy withdrew into herself but there was no avoiding Willow's question. Buffy went on to explain about Hellmouth, Giles, about her nightly patrols. Willow listened attentively, completely fascinated by what she was hearing. Completely overwhelmed by it too. No sooner had Buffy finished, and before Willow could respond the Chandler twins were piling into the car.

"Hi guys," Laura was bubbly. She obviously had a wonderful time tonight. "What was the movie about?"
