Your question while straight forward does not have an easy answer.
First of all if you are convicted of a killing it doesn't matter if you
did it or not you serve the same amount of time as anyone else.
The length of the sentence depends on the type and degree of the
killing.
There is 1st and 2nd degree murder, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, degree as well as
voluntary and involuntary manslaughter all of which carry their own
minimum and maximum sentences ranging from 1 year to execution. All of
this also differs from state to state.
So the only advice I'd give you is do what the judges do guess.
I hope this helps and it doesn't confuse you at least not anymore than
it does everyone else.
