Chapter Three

Giles was sitting in the library researching when someone walked in. He looked up to see a girl...he wasn't exactly sure who it was, but had a feeling that he should have known, because she looked vaguely familiar.

"Hello Mr. Giles" she said faintly. "I'm Tara McClay." She held out her hand tentatively.

He stood up tentatively and shook her hand. "You wouldn't happen to be the daughter of Jim and Carol McClay?" he asked after looking her over. She had dark blonde hair, and wasn't quite so skinny as Willow or Buffy, but wasn't exactly large either. And there was something in her aura that didn't exactly project confidence, but she had some ...and also a hint of magic.

She nodded yes, and quickly sat down. "I had heard that they had a daughter, but I didn't believe it for the life of me...what are you doing in Sunnydale?" he knew the answer, but asked the question anyway.

"The Council sent my parents to make reports about the demon ratio in Sunnydale, and to watch over you and the Slayer." She said all of this with her eyes on the table, not looking up once. "I was actually wondering if you knew someone that I could practice magic with...because I used to practice with this group of people in San Francisco, but I haven't heard of any groups here." She ran on without taking a single breath. She had said it so quickly that Giles really had to concentrate on what she was saying to understand her, and so he didn't hear the door open and shut.

"I'll practice with you." Amy said quietly.

Giles looked up surprised that someone else was in the room...then saw Tara blush and look away from Amy. "Okay." She said barely above a whisper.

"Giles, I was actually looking for Buffy and Willow, you haven't seen them have you?" As Giles shook his head 'no,' Amy turned to Tara. "Want to go and meet the Slayer and her witch?" Giles eyes bugged out at this, and he looked sternly at Amy, silently promising that they would talk about her blunt announcement later.

Tara looked back and forth between the two of them and saw the silent communication. "Uhm, sure...it was nice to meet you Mr. Giles." She said as she stood up and started walking toward Amy, then quickly turned around to Giles "My parents were wondering if you wanted to come to dinner next week sometime?" She said.

"That would be nice." Was all he said as she smiled bashfully and headed out of the library doors.

Out in the hallway

"I'm Amy." She said, extending her hand to Tara. Tara gently took her hand and an electric pulse shot through both of their arms. "Wow." Was all that either of them could think to say. "Jinx!" Amy pointed out in satisfaction.

All Tara did was laugh.
