Chapter 2

She was broken. This wasn't how she pictured life to be, none of this is what she thought would ever be. She just wanted to be happy and now she was talking to air, just like she had done the week before. Memories can be such mean things, but they can be so wonderful as well.

"It's weird that I can remember that day like it was yesterday when it has been four years already. Maybe it's because you left such an impression on me." The young woman spoke softly to the headstone where her first true love rested. "You probably hate this, you told me you never wanted to be buried." She chuckled softly "You didn't want to risk getting dug up and have people see your bones, 'They're mine and no one can see them, that's private'. I can still hear you say it." A few tears made their way down the woman's cheek.

*How long does it take to cross a fucking street?* Buffy thought impatiently. The bell for lunch had rung a little over fifteen minutes ago but still no sign of a certain redhead and best bud.

"Give it up, Buff. They're not coming. That means you won't either." Harmony yelled at the blonde. Buffy turned around and gave her the finger with a playful grin then turned back just in time to see Willow in tow with Xander leaving the school building. Buffy turned back around, deciding to play it cool and sat down on a windowsill.

"Look at us, we made it." Xander grinned when they arrived and joined Buffy on the windowsill as Willow remained standing in front of them.

"Took you long enough, I was starting to think you were too chicken to join the big kids." Buffy smirked and grabbed her cigarettes. She offered Willow and Xander one, shooting the redhead her infamous shy but seductive look. Seeing Willow blush lightly made Buffy grin widely *It always works.*.

"Buffy was more scared you wouldn't show up." Cordelia said loosely, receiving an angry glare from the blonde. Xander chuckled at the brunette but Cordelia just rolled her eyes at him.

"So, Buffy," Xander grinned "if I offered you a cookie, would you be a nice doggy and sit?" Buffy mock glared and hit him on his arm.

"Retard." She made a face at him and laughed when the boy crossed his eyes, sticking out his tongue. Harmony pulled up her nose, returning to her nails but Cordelia laughed along with Buffy when Xander kept making ugly faces.

The conversation between the friends had grown casual with the occasional flirting coming from Buffy towards the redhead. Willow noticed that while Cordelia, Xander and herself sometimes threw in anecdotes from their parents or family, Buffy only told them something about her little sister but other than that she kept her responses superficial or dismissive. Buffy on the other hand noticed that Willow kept glancing at her but looked away every time Buffy looked in her direction.

"Girls, it's time to go. We've got class in five minutes." Harmony spoke up for the first time since Willow and Xander had arrived, collecting her things. Cordelia nodded and followed her blonde friend. When she was about to cross the street she turned around and smiled at Xander.

"Are you coming?" He grinned and grabbed his things, not bothering to say goodbye to his best friend and went after Cordelia, leaving the two girls alone.

"Do you think she's serious about Willow?" Cordelia asked the blonde keeping her voice down and checking on the distance between them and Xander.

"Buffy? That'll be the day, that girl can't take anything serious." Harmony snorted then shushed Cordelia when Xander caught up with them.

"So, girls, how are you?" He asked smooth and threw his arms around the two girls. Harmony rolled her eyes and turned to the teenage boy.

"Xander, the only reason Cordy asked you to come along is to give Buffy and Willow some alone time." Harmony said annoyed at his presence and threw his arms off of her. Xander looked a little hurt but after a wink from Cordelia he felt a lot better.

Thirty feet behind them were Willow and Buffy walking and talking small stuff. Buffy noticed the occasional glances her way and smirked. *This girl is too easy.* She thought.

"What are you smirking about?" The redhead asked amused.

"You." Buffy simply said, smiling in the redhead's direction. They walked in the school, realizing the bell had already rung. Buffy pecked the redhead on the cheek and turned to go to her classroom.

"What? No hug? I'm hurt." Willow called after her. Buffy smirked and turned around, walking backwards.

"I'll give you a hug if you give me a kiss. I'll see you later, redhead." Buffy winked and turned back around. Willow stood there for a moment, she wasn't expecting that.

*What kind of kiss would she mean?* She rolled her eyes at her own thoughts *What the hell do you think, Willow? She's gorgeous and somewhat of a player. Somewhat? No, no, a serious player. She wants an actual kiss, doofus!* Making her way to her class she kept wondering about how it would be to kiss Buffy.

"Get the hell out of my house."

"This is my house, you lost your fucking right to this place when you cheated on me, asshole."

Buffy gritted her teeth when she entered the house she called her home for the last three years. She so badly wanted to hurt her stepfather but he was much stronger than her and that wouldn't do her mom's case any good. She crept up the stairs and already found her sister sitting on her bed. Dawn did that a lot lately; whenever their stepfather raised his voice she would go to Buffy's room with her Game Boy™ and wouldn't leave until he left the house.

"Hey Dawnie, did you do your homework?" Buffy asked as she set down her backpack and jumped on the bed. Dawn was her favorite person by miles. She would never ever tell her baby sister that but it was true.

"My homework is downstairs. I was doing it when Luke came in so mom told me to go upstairs." Dawn replied "He's not even supposed to be here, you knew that?" The brunette asked her sister.

"Yeah, I know, court order." Buffy replied. "Think we should call the cops again?" Dawn shook her head and pulled her knees up to her chest.

"Mom wanted to talk to him, tell him she knows about his tax frauds or something. Seems Luke made a lot more money than any of us knew." The slamming of the front door made both girls get up and walk to the top of the stairs.

"It's okay, girls, he's gone now." Joyce said when she saw her daughters standing at the top of the stairs. Dawn quickly came down the stairs and immediately put on the TV while Buffy hugged her mother.

"Are you okay?" The blonde asked Joyce. The older woman smiled to herself and kissed the top of Buffy's head before letting her go.

"I'm fine, I called the police and told them he was here again and they said they were going to take him in but you know Luke." Joyce sighed.

"He can talk himself out of anything." Buffy stated. They walked in the living room and joined Dawn on the couch.

"How was school?" Joyce asked, trying to tear her daughters' attention away from the TV. She didn't like it when her daughters were constantly watching TV. Buffy at least got out every once in a while but Dawn almost never left the house.

"Good, we have a new teacher for Math and she's pretty cool." Dawn replied, not taking her eyes off of the TV.

"It was okay, I broke up with Nathalie." Buffy replied indifferently. Joyce tried to seem shocked but she knew Buffy wasn't the one to stay with one girl. Especially not with Nathalie, that girl was no good for her daughter but she couldn't forbid her teenage daughter to stop seeing Nathalie. Buffy needed to make her own mistakes and as long as Buffy didn't ask for her mother's advice, Joyce didn't meddle.

"And you started flirting with another girl right after that." Dawn said grinning when she saw Buffy staring at her openmouthed out of the corner of her eye.

"How'd you know that?" The blonde asked dumbfounded. She knew new traveled fast but that fast? If Dawn knew then everyone else could know so Nathalie knew too and that never was a good thing.

"Oh, please. If there's one thing that never changes it's that ex-girlfriends have big mouths." Dawn snorted then shrugged. "That and Harmony told me."

"When did you see Harmony?" Buffy asked confused. She didn't see Dawn all day but her best friend's protégé did see her? Something was seriously off.

"After school, while you were too busy talking to Cordelia about... Wendy?" Dawn turned to look at Buffy with a questioning look. Joyce sat in between her daughters with her arms crossed and an amused look on her face, looking back and forth between Dawn and Buffy.

"Willow. And before you say anything, she's different." Buffy said, already knowing Dawn would come up with a remark about her... preferred unattached lifestyle.

"Yeah, she's younger." The brunette rolled her eyes and turned back to the TV screen. Buffy had to admit it, for a girl who was never seen with too many friends, she always seemed to know these things very fast.

"Shut up." Buffy laughed and smacked a pillow against her younger sister. Dawn turned to her with a shocked impression while Joyce held her hand to her mouth, to keep from laughing.

The next day Buffy was as giddy as a kid in a candy store and she had no clue what made her this happy. When she came to her usual spot she greeted Cordelia and Harmony and was surprised that they were being friendly to Willow and Xander and their friends, well at least Cordelia was. Harmony was just trying to disappear when one of the younger boys tried to make his move on her.

"Hey beautiful." Buffy winked at Willow who blushed and chuckled nervously in return. *She's so much fun.* Buffy thought seeing the blush slowly creep on the redhead's face.

"Hey Buff." Xander happily greeted the blonde, jumping off the windowsill to let Buffy sit next to Willow. Buffy grinned at the male teenager and jumped next to Willow. She eased her way closer to the redhead until their hands were touching slightly. Willow glanced down to their hands and smoothly took the blonde's hand into hers without the others seeing. That move made Buffy's grin grew wider and squeezed the hand gently, showing the redhead she didn't mind.

"When am I going to get my hug?" Willow whispered in the blonde's ear next to her. Buffy turned her head slightly so that their lips were only inches apart.

"When am I gonna get my kiss?" Buffy whispered back, unconsciously licking her lips. Willow bit her lip and glanced at the blonde's lips. *Come on, baby, take a chance, I won't bite... unless you want me to.* the blonde's thoughts were suddenly interrupted by Harmony's harsh words of rejection.

"Get away from me, you little creep, I wouldn't go out with you if you were the last maggot on the planet." With that the school bell rang. Willow pulled away from Buffy and jumped off the windowsill. The blonde grabbed her hand and pulled her in between her legs. She wrapped her legs around the slender girl in front of her, leaned in closer to the redhead and placed a feather light kiss on the Willow's cheek.

"I still want my kiss." The words were spoken so softly yet it held so much desire it made the redhead shudder lightly.

"Come find me and maybe you'll get it." Willow smiled seductively and pulled herself free from the blonde. While catching up with her friends the redhead took a glance over her shoulder and winked at Buffy. *Oh, I'll find you and make you mine.*

"Are you done screwing around? We've got a class to get to." Cordelia sighed and collected her books. Buffy laughed and jumped off the windowsill.

"I'm never done screwing around, Cordy, you know that." She winked at her best friend and they soon joined Harmony. Buffy for once let them have their mindless conversation about a guy that was an asshole but in their eyes a God as her thoughts traveled to the redhead's lips, her scent and the way her hand seemed to fit perfectly in Willow's.
