Don't know if this is of interest - but is an answer provided to the question of Buffy's name in the UK Buffy mag:
"The name Buffy is usually short for Elisabeth, although the Buffy in 'Buffy Anne Summers' isn't short for anything."
Don't know how official / unofficial that is, but I never knew Buffy was short for Elisabeth before that :o)

escapes me at the moment). So far as I know that's hwere it originally
came from.

I believe it was in Ahn's 'Wedding' Series. Buffy's Grandmother keeps calling her Elizabeth and when people ask 'why?', that is what she tells them.
